Good Food Market Assistant
( 9 weeks, August 28th to October 27th 24 hours per week - 17 $ /hour)
We are currently looking to hire a Good Food Market Assistant. The person will work as part of the food distribution team. They will be involved in the preparation of the Good Food Markets and will also support the emergency food aid service, Marché Depot.
The Good Food Markets offer local produce at affordable prices to members of our community. We run several markets each week in different locations within NDG, chosen because of reduced access to fresh fruits and vegetables by local residents living in those areas.
About the Depot Community Food Centre: Founded in 1986, The Depot is a community-based non-profit organization that works collaboratively with its community to address the root causes of hunger and poverty in NDG and the surrounding areas in a manner that ensures dignity, community engagement and the development of human potential. What we are offering:
● Practical experience in: customer service and cash handling, organizational and logistical planning relating to running a produce market, working with and directing volunteers
● Opportunity to meet and make connections with a diverse population of community participants, as well as other local organizations
● Welcoming and dynamic team; chance to build confidence and gain autonomy, lots of hands on learning.
Responsibilities/Tasks:
● Helping with the setting up and dismantling of the markets (preparation of the fruits and vegetables beforehand, filling up the truck, traveling to the markets, creating a welcoming set-up; dismantling at the end of the day)
● Chat with customers, give advice, and sell market products;
● Operate the market cash register;
● Participate in various logistical tasks in the food distribution department (food box preparation, inventory counting, shelving...)
What we are looking for: ● Interest in improving French language skills (additional language an asset);
● In good physical shape, able to stand for several hours at a time, able to carry heavy loads; comfortable working outdoors;
● Comfortable interacting with people of different backgrounds in a positive and friendly way;
● Knowledge of fruits and vegetables and a desire to promote healthy choices (sales experience is an asset, but is not required);
● Ability to work efficiently as a member of a team;
● A sense of initiative and a desire to take part in the adventure of life at the Depot and its markets!
Eligibility requirements and contract conditions:

achieve this, we aim to recruit a team that is representative of NDG’s diverse identities and lived experiences in order for our work to be by and for our communities.
This position is a continuation of a program formerly funded by the Community Innovation Fund to help the English-speaking communities of Quebec in vulnerable situations to put social innovation into action, acquire new skills, find employment and combat isolation. To be eligible, you must be: (1) Between the ages of 16 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of the contract; (2) Member of a linguistic minority (anglophone); Be legally entitled to work in Quebec and have a valid social insurance number.
● The person should be available to work monday through Friday, including Wednesday and Thursday evenings (up to 7:30pm) – exact schedule to be determined with supervisor
● Reports directly to: our Good Food Market Coordinator (Melanie R.)
