Conductors work in train crews of two or three people, and perform the tasks associated with moving trains, cars and locomotives in yards and on the track. They coordinate train marshalling and perform ground work outside the locomotive cab, in the yard and en route (e.g., switching points, picking up cars, emergency repairs, etc.).

Responsibilities

The tasks set out in this section are those that a member of staff must be able to perform with or without accommodation in order to achieve the objectives of the conductor's position.

  • Ensure compliance with all railway orders, signals and regulations relating to safety and operations.
  • Use various forms of communication to transmit and receive instructions concerning the movement and positioning of cars.
  • Forming and separating trains in the yard, and picking up and uncoupling cars en route.
  • Observe, interpret and relay signals to ensure safe train and locomotive movements.
  • Operate switches to change the route of locomotives and wagons.
    Inspect the condition of trains and rolling stock.
  • Make effective decisions even in unfamiliar places or emergency situations.
  • Communicate effectively with the Rail Traffic Control Center, other train crews and other departments on a regular basis using a portable radio.

Working conditions and physical demands

  • Work a varied schedule, with regular and predictable attendance, compatible with a context of continuous operation (includes work at night, on weekends and holidays, overtime and work away from home for long periods).
  • Ability to push, pull, lift and carry a load weighing up to 90 lbs (41 kg).
  • Working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Use of various devices on wagons and locomotives, such as uncoupling levers and hand brakes.
  • Ability to climb up and down the ladder of a moving car.
  • Ability to grasp and hold objects while standing on the side of a moving train.
  • Ability to walk frequently for long periods.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat and kneel frequently.
  • Must meet all fitness-for-duty assessment requirements for the position, including those established by the Railway Association of Canada, such as the ability to recognize and distinguish signal colors.

Other requirements

  • Successful completion of written examinations on safety and regulations. (Note: In accordance with the collective agreement, conductors must qualify as locomotive engineers to retain their seniority and employment).
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Regulation study certificate card
  • Valid passport for entry into the U.S. and Canada (certain locations)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
